a few things

Earlier this month Product Body [1] offered a discount code and a few people had some trouble, so she's fixed it up and extended the deadline through the end of June. Enter NOTMARTHA15 for 15% off when you?re checking out. Valid for everything on the site except the Scrub of the Month club, use as often as you'd like.

I'll also mention that School House Craft [2] is still offering 20% off for any ticket combination to the conference. Enter notmartha when you buy your tickets. This will be good up until the event (in September!).

And finally there is a pretty neat thing happening here in Seattle this Thursdsay, June 16th:

Moveable Type coming to Seattle's Central District!
June 16th, 5-8pm
at Miss Cline Press shop
2370 East Cherry (cherry & 23rd ave)

Join us for a printing party to welcome the Moveable Type national tour on its first stop in Seattle.

Moveable Type is a mobile print shop built into the back of an old delivery truck. The truck is owned by Kyle Durrie, the proprietor of Power and Light Press in Portland, Oregon. Kyle is starting a 9+ month tour across North America. The idea is to combine her two passions of traveling and printing. Now, the truck is ready and the adventure is just beginning. Her first stop in Seattle will be in the heart of Central District at Miss Cline Press shop.

During her trip, Kyle will be visiting schools, art spaces, city parks, music and arts festivals, craft shows, parties, and anywhere else that has an interest in learning about printing the old fashioned way.

Moveable Type will be setting up its mobile print shop outside Miss Cline Press on Thursday, June 16th for an evening of printing demos, studio/truck tours, and tall tales about life on the road. This event is free and open to the public, and participants can expect to get their hands dirty and make a few prints to take home with them.

A priceless opportunity! Hope to see you there.

Know what?s good? Peanut butter cup S?mores.

S'mores made with peanut butter cups instead of the usual chocolate are pretty darn great. I forget where I first learned about this, I think it was a mention over on Pinterest [1].

Wanna hear the best thing I've learned in a while? Set the chocolate near the fire to melt while you're cooking your marshmallow to the the perfect puffy and golden brown state. That way the chocolate is nice and melty and the marshmallow has to do less work. This tip comes from Kyle [2], who is my new hero.

Sailing Polar Bear Embroidery Pattern

This sailing polar bear embroidery pattern tickles my imagination. I first fell in love with it when Nicole first posted about it on Twitter, and now there's a pattern for it! (I wondered if it was a parable about climate change, but it turns out that she was just thinking how awesome a sailing polar bear would be.) I think it would be the perfect thing to work on during the hot summer to cool your brain.

May Birthday Giveaways!

Hi, hello, hi there. This May marks the tenth year of Not Martha, ten years! A whole decade! To celebrate I'm holding giveaways each weekday in May filled with stuff I love from people I know. It's gonna be fun.

Looking back at the archives I see the first post was on May 22nd, 2001 and I only posted six things that month. The very first post to this site was about a kit that helps you put gifts inside of balloons [1] (sadly, a dead link), the second post was about a long time love of mine the Meathead [2] (miraculously it's still there [3], it's a plastic skull covered with red jello then layers of cold cuts to be served at Halloween and the reason I called my meatloaf hand the Meat Hand [4]), my third post was a list of stuff I liked [5] including retro video games, cookbooks and dishes made of sugar. Posts four [6], five [7] and six [8] are regarding Fluevog shoes that leave hoof prints, gasses that preserve a half empty bottle of wine, and the article in Salon that mentions a magazine that would be published sometime later that year, it was called "Readymade". Taking just the first six posts into consideration I'm gonna go ahead and say this here site hasn't changed much in the past decade. It really doesn't seem like that long.

Each giveaway will take entries for about 24 hours and the first one will be tomorrow morning. Good luck everybody!

This is what the last ferry at night out from Bremerton looks like. I was on foot and barely made it, I half-jogged the few miles from the house of the friend I was visiting, sprinted up the pedestrian entrance and moments after I got on board the ferry pulled away.

There were very few people with me, one was a very big and ominous bald man with the most amazing and delicate flower tattoo covering his scalp. I wanted to rub his head but thought he might take it the wrong way.

How-To: Organize Your Crafting with Evernote

CZ_OrganizeIt.gif

evernote1.jpgImage by craftapalooza, via Flickr

By Andrea MacDonald

I love to do fiber craft. I weave, spin, knit, crochet, felt, and do Kumihimo. Keeping track of all the ideas, wish lists, yarns, tools, and patterns related to all my projects could be a full-time job. I have tried journals, file boxes, small and large plastic bins, various bags, and sketchpads to organize information for my projects. In the long run nothing worked for me, because invariably whatever I needed would be someplace else. I'd be in the car (riding, not driving) and wanted to graft the toe of a sock, but darned if I can remember the steps to Kitchener stitch. Or, on more than one occasion, much to my embarrassment, I bought the same knitting pattern twice!

About two years ago, I discovered a program called Evernote, and since then I've been in love, and I find myself actually organized! Evernote is like an electronic junk drawer - you can use it to capture webpages, PDF documents, photos, and audio notes. But unlike a physical junk drawer, you can find specific items in Evernote very easily, since you can organize your information by notebook (folder) and tag (keyword).

As a knitter, I keep notes on different techniques in Evernote, such as the one-row buttonhole or blanket stitch. I also keep notes on sizing for each person I've knitted something for. Other folks have gone farther than I have, keeping inventories of craft supplies and tools. In addition to using Evernote as a reference portfolio, I use it as a place to stash all my design ideas and many of my inspirations.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to import a PDF and a web page into Evernote. Before we do the actual importing, we'll look at the structure of the Evernote desktop screen.

Dinosaurs and Fairy Tales Made from Balloons

LarryMoss_spinosaurus.jpg

My journey began with this post on MAKE, about "airigami" artist Larry Moss and his amazing balloon-sculpting skills. He's currently fundraising to build a balloon dinosaur park called Elastic Park, filled with creatures like the one above.

Digging deeper into Larry's website, I found so many interesting balloon projects in his archives, including Balloon Manor, a Halloween house for which he was featured on MARTHA, and this incredibly detailed project, Once Upon a Time. Watch the video to see the fary-tale sculptures in action, plus a time-lapse of the construction process. Who knew balloons could be made to take on all those shapes?

Good Old Pegboard Organization Systems

There's a good reason why pegboard has been around forever, and is such a common solution for organizing tools. It's inexpensive, easily painted, and so simple to customize with a variety of readily-available hooks.

DIY Life has a nice round-up of ways to use pegboard for crafty and cooking storage. Even if it's not your dream organization solution, it's a dandy way to get you organized while you're saving up.

May Birthday Giveaway: a CSA share from Juniper Moon Farm

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to say that Juniper Moon Farm [1] has offered a Yarn CSA [2] for one lucky reader, the 2012 Spring Shearing worth $175 (that's some serious yarn). The Yarn CSA works like a farm CSA but instead you get a yield of the scrumptious yarn that is produced from the sheep and goats they lovingly raise. Juniper Moon Farm is amazing run by a small group of people who are dedicated to what they do and are fantastic about sharing what is going on with share holders, visitors, and readers of their blog. The farm was started by Susan, whom I've followed since she started (back then it was the Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm, which you might remember if you've been reading my site long enough) and I'm astounded and so pleased to watch how it's grown. If you're not already I encourage you to read the blog [3], follow along as lambs are born in the spring on the LambCams [4], see what the farm dogs [5] are up to, you can attend shearing day [6] and even stay at the farm [7] for a week or long weekend. It's really amazing to watch the farm work all year and then find yarn at your door that reflects all of the care and attention that they put into it. I just want to hug the whole farm. The blog isn't just about the farm, I've loved all the Probably Something You Would Like [8] links posts, her recent pictures from Preakness [9], her famous world's greatest granola recipe [10] and how she went paper towel free on the whole farm [11] (it involves making a lot of your own cloth napkins [12], enough so you always have plenty of clean ones).

Would you like to win this amazing Yarn CSA? If so please leave a comment with this entry and let me know the following: Have you ever spent time on a farm? I spent a few summers on my uncle's farm in Oklahoma, he had cattle, two greyhounds, a small lake with a rope swing, a tiny farmhouse and bales of hay that seemed to be piled taller than the house itself. I loved it there. Ok, you've got until Tuesday, May 24th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [13] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: Kirby Krackle

[1]

Today I have the first two albums by nerd rock band Kirby Krackle [2] to give away! My husband Scott [3] plays bass for the band so I can tell you they are currently hard at work on their third album, which they are writing and recording at a lightning fast speed. If you are not familiar with Kirby Krackle them you can listen to some of their music right here [4] on their site. I am not a music reviewer so instead please allow me to point you towards this review of E is for Everybody (the second album) over at Wired's Geek Dad: Kirby Krackle?s E For Everyone is Geek Rock Perfection [5] where he says "there is truly not a bad song among its 11 offerings. Each is a perfect nugget of guitar pop glory adorned with the kind of semi-obscure references you?d expect from self professed geek rockers."

I you want any nerd cred you must have these albums! To enter please leave a comment with this post, you have until Thursday, May 5th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [6] applies. If you'd like please answer this question: When you were a kid who was your favorite superhero? I'll go first: I wanted to be Wonder Woman. I was just the right age to both watch the show and wear the Underoos and I remember running around the yard with friends pretending to lasso bad guys and fly in the invisible jet. (While running around in the yard I was wearing regular clothes not the Underoos, just to be clear there.) OK, good luck everybody! Closed, thanks for entering!

Braille Carved into Soap

braille carved soap.jpg

These poetic castile soap carvings were created by Arianna Vanini as part of an installation called, "tactile."

Each element represents a letter of the Braille alphabet. The letters compose the sentence, "the essential is invisible to the eyes," a quote from "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupry...Because of the nature of the material, this work is intended to disappear.

Ojo de Dios by Jay Mohler

jay_mohler_gods_eyes.jpg

I remember the god's eyes crafts from summer camp, but these works of art from Jay Mohler blow those clean out of the water.

I've been making Ojos de Dios ever since seeing such yarn and stick mandalas in almost the exact form made by Huicholi natives of Mexico, and lamas from Tibet. Later I made many Ojos de Dios (Spanish for Eyes of God) in a Navajo 8-sided design, when "ojos" were a popular folk art in the 1970's American Southwest. Much more recently I've mostly made 12-sided Ojos de Dios, which I believe can represent a whole panorama of spiritual cosmologies ..... although for myself, I create these for artistic satisfaction rather than as any sort of spiritual talisman.

May Birthday Giveaway: Super Natural Every Day

[1]

This month Not Martha will be 10 years old. Ten years! To celebrate I'm holding a giveaway each weekday, they'll be filled with stuff I love made by people I know. Here we go.

I'm super happy to have a copy of Heidi Swanson's book Super Natural Every Day [2] to offer as our first giveaway. Heidi's site, 101 Cookbooks [3] is one of those sites I've been reading for years and years and our cookbook club chose her first book, Super Natural Cooking [4], for our first meeting and everything was a delicious success. With Super Natural Every Day Heidi has given us simpler and quicker recipes that I cannot wait to make. The book is broken up into Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Dinner, Drinks and Treats and has a collection of tips that I've found myself trusting Heidi to know. (Eggs from really awesome small farms actually are more difficult to peel! It's not my imagination!) Did I mention this book is vegetarian? It is. I hardly noticed though. I ate dinner just shortly before I am typing this and the photos are making me hungry again.

You want this book. To enter please leave a comment with this entry, you have until Tuesday, May 3rd at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. If you'd like please answer this question: Have you ever cooked with dandelion greens? I'll go first: I have not, but there is a recipe for Chickpeas & Dandelion Greens in this book that is very simple (seven ingredients!) and I'm gonna try it. Alright, good luck everybody! Closed! Thank you for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: lovely tea towels from mirror mirror

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I've got a set of colorful Atelier LZC Tea Towels [1] from the mirror mirror [2] shop, which currently spans both the UK and the US. I known Paola [3] because I read that she moved with her family from London to my old neighborhood here in Seattle so I sent her a very long email describing where I thought the best food shops and parks were. Happily she didn't think I was a crazy person and I've had an excuse to visit my old home, including this one bakery that makes good soups, ever since. I absolutely love the way she has curated what is offered in her shop, and I continue to have a crush on the stacking egg cups [4] which are, if you'll allow me, the most practical of all egg cups I've seen.

f you'd like these two lovely French-designed tea towels to grace your kitchen please leave a comment with this entry, and if you'd like something to chat about (I love reading all the comments) answer this question: Have you ever been to a high tea? I have, twice, and I have to say I found the little sandwiches confounding each time. Your turn, you've got until Saturday, May 28th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. Good luck! Closed, thanks for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: lovely things from Joy the Baker

What's going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today's giveaway is from Joy the Baker [1], it's a bunch of stuff she likes and thinks you might like too. When I asked her originally I thought her book (she's gonna have a book coming out!) would be a great thing to giveaway, but it turns out the book is still a long ways off. But, being sweet as she is, she jumped in a offered to get together some good things, because she's nice like that. She also hinted that there would be a few additional surprises included.

If you'd like to win the care package from Joy please leave a comment with this post, you have until 10 a.m. on Friday, May 20th to enter, the fine print [2] applies. If you'd like something to mention please tell us: Do you have a favorite kitchen gadget? I have recently been introduced to the new style of can openers that don't leave a sharp edge and refuse to look back (I am clumsy in the kitchen). Ok, good luck everybody! Closed! Thanks so much for entering.

How-To: Homemade Blueberry Pie Ice Cream

blueberry_pie_icecream.jpg

With summer well underway, we've been consuming our fair share of ice cream. I've always wished we had an ice cream maker to whip up batches of homemade ice cream on our own, and this recipe from She Wears Many Hats makes me want one even more. See how she combines blueberry pie ingredients for a scrumptious frosty treat. [via Bakerella]

I've been admiring Quivver's handmade wooden arrows for some time (there's something so alluring about their simple shape and complicated history), but these spiral hitched arrows are really knocking my socks off! I love the embroidered wood and fun colors.
