May Birthday Giveaway: a CSA share from Juniper Moon Farm

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I'm thrilled to say that Juniper Moon Farm [1] has offered a Yarn CSA [2] for one lucky reader, the 2012 Spring Shearing worth $175 (that's some serious yarn). The Yarn CSA works like a farm CSA but instead you get a yield of the scrumptious yarn that is produced from the sheep and goats they lovingly raise. Juniper Moon Farm is amazing run by a small group of people who are dedicated to what they do and are fantastic about sharing what is going on with share holders, visitors, and readers of their blog. The farm was started by Susan, whom I've followed since she started (back then it was the Martha's Vineyard Fiber Farm, which you might remember if you've been reading my site long enough) and I'm astounded and so pleased to watch how it's grown. If you're not already I encourage you to read the blog [3], follow along as lambs are born in the spring on the LambCams [4], see what the farm dogs [5] are up to, you can attend shearing day [6] and even stay at the farm [7] for a week or long weekend. It's really amazing to watch the farm work all year and then find yarn at your door that reflects all of the care and attention that they put into it. I just want to hug the whole farm. The blog isn't just about the farm, I've loved all the Probably Something You Would Like [8] links posts, her recent pictures from Preakness [9], her famous world's greatest granola recipe [10] and how she went paper towel free on the whole farm [11] (it involves making a lot of your own cloth napkins [12], enough so you always have plenty of clean ones).

Would you like to win this amazing Yarn CSA? If so please leave a comment with this entry and let me know the following: Have you ever spent time on a farm? I spent a few summers on my uncle's farm in Oklahoma, he had cattle, two greyhounds, a small lake with a rope swing, a tiny farmhouse and bales of hay that seemed to be piled taller than the house itself. I loved it there. Ok, you've got until Tuesday, May 24th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [13] applies, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: Kirby Krackle

[1]

Today I have the first two albums by nerd rock band Kirby Krackle [2] to give away! My husband Scott [3] plays bass for the band so I can tell you they are currently hard at work on their third album, which they are writing and recording at a lightning fast speed. If you are not familiar with Kirby Krackle them you can listen to some of their music right here [4] on their site. I am not a music reviewer so instead please allow me to point you towards this review of E is for Everybody (the second album) over at Wired's Geek Dad: Kirby Krackle?s E For Everyone is Geek Rock Perfection [5] where he says "there is truly not a bad song among its 11 offerings. Each is a perfect nugget of guitar pop glory adorned with the kind of semi-obscure references you?d expect from self professed geek rockers."

I you want any nerd cred you must have these albums! To enter please leave a comment with this post, you have until Thursday, May 5th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [6] applies. If you'd like please answer this question: When you were a kid who was your favorite superhero? I'll go first: I wanted to be Wonder Woman. I was just the right age to both watch the show and wear the Underoos and I remember running around the yard with friends pretending to lasso bad guys and fly in the invisible jet. (While running around in the yard I was wearing regular clothes not the Underoos, just to be clear there.) OK, good luck everybody! Closed, thanks for entering!

Braille Carved into Soap

braille carved soap.jpg

These poetic castile soap carvings were created by Arianna Vanini as part of an installation called, "tactile."

Each element represents a letter of the Braille alphabet. The letters compose the sentence, "the essential is invisible to the eyes," a quote from "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint-Exupry...Because of the nature of the material, this work is intended to disappear.

Kyle is starting a 9+ month tour across North America. The idea is to combine her two passions of traveling and printing. Now, the truck is ready and the adventure is just beginning. During her trip, Kyle will be visiting schools, art spaces, city parks, music and arts festivals, craft shows, parties, and anywhere else that has an interest in learning about printing the old fashioned way.

Ojo de Dios by Jay Mohler

jay_mohler_gods_eyes.jpg

I remember the god's eyes crafts from summer camp, but these works of art from Jay Mohler blow those clean out of the water.

I've been making Ojos de Dios ever since seeing such yarn and stick mandalas in almost the exact form made by Huicholi natives of Mexico, and lamas from Tibet. Later I made many Ojos de Dios (Spanish for Eyes of God) in a Navajo 8-sided design, when "ojos" were a popular folk art in the 1970's American Southwest. Much more recently I've mostly made 12-sided Ojos de Dios, which I believe can represent a whole panorama of spiritual cosmologies ..... although for myself, I create these for artistic satisfaction rather than as any sort of spiritual talisman.

May Birthday Giveaway: Super Natural Every Day

[1]

This month Not Martha will be 10 years old. Ten years! To celebrate I'm holding a giveaway each weekday, they'll be filled with stuff I love made by people I know. Here we go.

I'm super happy to have a copy of Heidi Swanson's book Super Natural Every Day [2] to offer as our first giveaway. Heidi's site, 101 Cookbooks [3] is one of those sites I've been reading for years and years and our cookbook club chose her first book, Super Natural Cooking [4], for our first meeting and everything was a delicious success. With Super Natural Every Day Heidi has given us simpler and quicker recipes that I cannot wait to make. The book is broken up into Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Dinner, Drinks and Treats and has a collection of tips that I've found myself trusting Heidi to know. (Eggs from really awesome small farms actually are more difficult to peel! It's not my imagination!) Did I mention this book is vegetarian? It is. I hardly noticed though. I ate dinner just shortly before I am typing this and the photos are making me hungry again.

You want this book. To enter please leave a comment with this entry, you have until Tuesday, May 3rd at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. If you'd like please answer this question: Have you ever cooked with dandelion greens? I'll go first: I have not, but there is a recipe for Chickpeas & Dandelion Greens in this book that is very simple (seven ingredients!) and I'm gonna try it. Alright, good luck everybody! Closed! Thank you for entering!

May Birthday Giveaway: lovely tea towels from mirror mirror

What?s going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today I've got a set of colorful Atelier LZC Tea Towels [1] from the mirror mirror [2] shop, which currently spans both the UK and the US. I known Paola [3] because I read that she moved with her family from London to my old neighborhood here in Seattle so I sent her a very long email describing where I thought the best food shops and parks were. Happily she didn't think I was a crazy person and I've had an excuse to visit my old home, including this one bakery that makes good soups, ever since. I absolutely love the way she has curated what is offered in her shop, and I continue to have a crush on the stacking egg cups [4] which are, if you'll allow me, the most practical of all egg cups I've seen.

f you'd like these two lovely French-designed tea towels to grace your kitchen please leave a comment with this entry, and if you'd like something to chat about (I love reading all the comments) answer this question: Have you ever been to a high tea? I have, twice, and I have to say I found the little sandwiches confounding each time. Your turn, you've got until Saturday, May 28th at 10 a.m. PST to enter, the fine print [5] applies. Good luck! May Birthday Giveaway: lovely things from Joy the Baker

What's going on here? My site started ten years ago this month and to celebrate I?m giving away something each weekday. Because I like you.

Today's giveaway is from Joy the Baker [1], it's a bunch of stuff she likes and thinks you might like too. When I asked her originally I thought her book (she's gonna have a book coming out!) would be a great thing to giveaway, but it turns out the book is still a long ways off. But, being sweet as she is, she jumped in a offered to get together some good things, because she's nice like that. She also hinted that there would be a few additional surprises included.

If you'd like to win the care package from Joy please leave a comment with this post, you have until 10 a.m. on Friday, May 20th to enter, the fine print [2] applies. If you'd like something to mention please tell us: Do you have a favorite kitchen gadget? I have recently been introduced to the new style of can openers that don't leave a sharp edge and refuse to look back (I am clumsy in the kitchen). Ok, good luck everybody! Closed! Pen Nib Dress

animated pen dress.jpg

I don't know much about dresses...or pen nibs, but apparently together they create an impressive visual effect, as this Pen Nib Dress by John Nussey and Steven Tai illustrates.

795 pen nibs, mounted on tiny motors, are sewn into the dress. These rows of pen nibs are animated to created a hypnotic shimmer of movement which changes over time, varying the tempo, pattern and the overall mood of the piece.

Ceramic Coasters are Maps of Oslo

Each of these coasters by Anders Hansen is a map of a section of Oslo.

This project started with my fascination for city grids, from the strict geometry of New York to the seemingly chaotic Bombay structure. At the time, living abroad and feeling a bit homesick, and I decided to use the map of Oslo, Norway as a starting point.

May Birthday Giveaway: goods from Schmancy

Today I'm happy to have a selection of goods from Schmancy [1], a tiny but super awesome shop here in Seattle (which you should visit if you are anywhere nearby). Schmancy is owned and run by Kristen Rask, author of books [2], runner of Urban Craft Uprising [3], creator of School House Craft [4] and general powerhouse. In a happy coincidence Schmancy launched a new website just yesterday, lookin' good.

The package from Schmancy includes a zipper pouch and strawberry magnet hand made by Kristen herself and three collectible items from her shop: a Dunny 2010 Series from Kid Robot, one City Critters from Mindstyle (all designs are from Jim Henson's sketchbook!) and a Droplets are from Crazy Label. Nice! To win please leave a comment with this entry and if you'd like answer this question: See that rainbow patch on the zipper pouch? It makes feel nostalgic. Have you ever collected patches as a kid? I'll go first: I had a few patches from when I was a Brownie (which didn't last all that long), and I used to go through my mom's collection of patches because they were so colorful. You've got until Thursday, May 12th at 10am to enter, the fine print [5] applies. Ok, good luck! Closed, thanks so much for entering!

I've been admiring Quivver's handmade wooden arrows for some time (there's something so alluring about their simple shape and complicated history), but these spiral hitched arrows are really knocking my socks off! I love the embroidered wood and fun colors.

Recipe: Grilled Corn Salad

In the Kitchen

june-recipe-grilledcornsalad-saladinbowlfinal.jpg

By Katie Goodman

Grilled corn is one of my family's favorite summer side vegetables. My daughter will gobble it up any night of the week.

Sometimes to mix things up I'll make a salad out of grilled corn rather than eating corn on the cob. This is a simple, versatile summer dish. Grilled Corn Salad is great as a side salad, in tacos, on top of mixed greens, or on grilled meats.

Silhouette SD Cutting Machine Fun

Though I am an enthusiatic paper-crafter, I hesitated to jump on the cutting machines bandwagon. They’re a little spendy – buying a machine and then all the cartridges. I just couldn’t justify it. Some of my friends have them and I was teeny bit jealous of the cool things they have made… So when the [...]

Bakesale for Japan tomorrow

[1]

It's 11 p.m. and I'm just finishing my baked goods for the Bakesale for Japan tomorrow. I'm fond of what I made and might have to buy one for myself since I didn't have any left over. I made Jars of Stars, lots of little star shaped cookies. (Pictures later.) It took a bit longer than I anticipated, but I think it was worth it. Here in Seattle it will be at the Cakespy shop (more details [2]). See the Bakesale for Japan [3] page to find if there is one being held near you.

I've got a few days worth of photos to put up but I'm tired and need to pack for a few days of travel, so I'll be back on Monday and catch up then. Hope your weekend is wonderful.

the alphabet according to my browser

I recently found myself idly typing letters into my browsers location bar and noticing which sites it first suggests as an auto complete. So I made this list, which may or may not be an interesting alphabetic snapshot of the sites I've recently been visiting the most often. These don't reflect sites that I read obsessively in RSS and some results are surprising. (No Twitter or Pinterest? I'll have to figure out how that works.)

A: Alicia Paulson [1], who was lovely enough to offer a copy of her book for the May giveaways

B: The Beer Junction [2], a local beer shop and where I get Pliny the Elder and good advice on what other beer I might like (I'm an IPA lover)

C: Cliff Mass [3], a local weather guru

D: Design Mom [4], I love following her reports from France

E: Epiphanie Bags [5], those lovely camera bags all the cool bloggers have (is now a good time to tell you I have one too?)

F: Feedburner [6], I set up my feed through them before they became owned by Google, and I was so relieved that the switch over was seamless

G: Grassroots Business Association [7], the small business group I'm a committee member of

H: The Hairpin [8], it's where I get beauty advice [9] from a producer of This American Life (that sound? is a few of my worlds colliding)

I: IMDB [10], for all those "that guy" look ups, I also like their collection of news [11] for updates on what is going on in movies and TV with just enough celebrity gossip thrown in

J: Jordan Ferney [12], maker of excellent parties and surprises, and reporting from her move to Paris

K: Knox Gelatine [13], research for a current project

L: Luxirare [14], I'm in love with her posts about food [15]

M: Musings of a Muse [16], where I get my makeup reviews

N: NetShift [17], a neat little game made by foon, NetShift is the successor to BlackShift (which I liked even more but doesn't work on newer computers, sadly)

O: Gmail [18]. Wait, Gmail? Apparently I don't visit sites that have O in them? How about Mrs. O [19]? Tom and Lorenzo [20]? Overstock [21]? C'mon browser!

P: Posie Gets Cozy [22], Alicia again, I got sucked in by the adorable dog and kept reading

Q: Ask Metafilter [23], not surprising in the least as it's all Qs

R: Random.org [24], the number generator I use for giveaway winners

S: School House Craft [25], a conference here in Seattle that I'll be at to talk about blogging with Blair from Wise Craft [26] and Molly from Orangette [27]

T: Tom and Lorenzo [28], they who do Project Rungay and keep up commentary on all sorts of shows and red carpet events

U: Ugly Green Chair [29], Whitney is one of my oldest blog-to-real-life friends!

V: Voracious [30], a local Seattle food blog

W: WTF with Marc Maron on PRX [31], these are a selection of WTF podcasts trimmed down to fit in a usual public radio slot and I'm so happy to see they are being picked up by public radio stations across the US (you should request it of your local station, just a suggestion -- I also suggest you listen to the WTF [32] podcast if you don't already)

X: XKCD [33], I like this online comic so darn much

Y: YouTube [34], this one is a surprise as I really don't spend much time on the site, though I did watch this fun fan-made Portal video yesterday: Outside Aperture [35]

Z: Zappos [36], I recently panic-ordered a lot of shoes to try and they all arrived in one big box, it's so large I could curl up inside and ship myself back

Whenever I bake I end up making last minute trips to the grocery store for one ingredient or the other. This time my dough for the Jar of Stars [1] needed to rest over night and in order to get it made I needed to make a late night trip. While there this packaging for something else entirely caught my (tired) eye.

daily photo thing update: Today I'm finally posting a backlog of photos all at once and renaming them "almost daily photo" because I'm no good at keeping up with stuff and, as it turns out, I'm really not good at keeping up with stuff when I've put a set of artificial rules on myself. So I'll try to post a photo a day but if I'm busy or got nothing I won't. I mean, I don't want to start resenting my own self, right?

How-To: Patchwork Lanyard

If you need to keep your id card on all day at work, why not at least have a cool crafty lanyard from which to hang it? C.L. Tice of Mused has a tutorial for making one over on Craft Leftovers. I love her reuse of a keychain ring!

This is the mural I stare at while I'm waiting for the Light Rail to arrive. For some reason the thing I focus on first is always Alice juxtaposed with the rice cooker. Something about the rushed worry next to a quiet kitchen appliance makes me giggle. My camera does that face detection thing and I'm happy to tell you it only recognized Dr. Frankenfurter Elizabeth Taylor there as a human.
